Project Description
Our project was to offer 16 free trees to Hastings Village residents on a first-come first-served basis. In order to complete this project, we ordered trees from Rosedale Nursery and arranged for delivery (residents were responsible for the planting and watering of their trees). We also provided information about the trees, such as how to plant them and care for them, and lent out tools (shovels, a wheel barrow, soil, and mulch) to help participants plant their trees.
16 participants received free native trees.
16 native trees were planted by village residents.
8 different species of native trees were planted.
As a result, more pollinators have habitat in Hastings because of increased native tree populations.
As a result, Hastings will have more summer shade.
As a result, Hastings will have better air quality, and sequester more carbon from the atmosphere.
We worked with Rosedale Nurseries to draft a budget that included all of the trees purchased for our project, as well as other necessary materials
We created an application form for participants
We created a list of recipients with their information and sent it to Rosedale Nurseries to have them delivered
We also delivered several of the trees ourselves
After delivery, we followed up with participants: we gave them information about planting and tree care, and answered any questions they had
We provided mulch and soil, as well as optional shovels and a wheelbarrow, in case recipients needed them
We learned valuable knowledge about how to create a budget and alter it if necessary.
Through our budgeting, we also learned more about how to use Google Sheets, as well as Google Forms.
We learned about the native trees we were planting and how they should be cared for.
We learned the importance of having native trees for pollinators.

Thank you very much to Mary Lambert, who was instrumental along the way, as well as Haven Colgate and Mayor Armacost for their roles in spreading information about our project. We would also like to give a very big thank you to William New at Rosedale Nurseries, who spent a lot of time working with us to create a budget, pick out trees, and answer any of our questions about the project. Finally, thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies for funding this project.
